Punjab Kings' Historic Journey in IPL 2025

New Delhi [India] - The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are on the verge of making history in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. After a series of underwhelming performances in previous years, the team has shown remarkable improvement under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. Currently, PBKS leads the IPL points table with 19 points, having secured nine victories, suffered four defeats, and shared points in one match due to a no-result. Their recent impressive win against the Mumbai Indians (MI) by seven wickets has secured them a spot in Qualifier 1.

Much of the team's success this season can be attributed to Iyer, who has not only stabilized the middle order but also fostered a strong sense of direction within the squad. Robin Uthappa, a former Indian cricketer and expert on JioStar, praised Iyer's leadership during a discussion on JioHotstar.

“Shreyas has consistently proven to be an outstanding captain,” Uthappa stated. “He always seemed to feel undervalued at KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) despite his contributions. Moving to a franchise with a less successful history and leading them to victory speaks volumes about his leadership and confidence,” he added.

Iyer's transition to Punjab Kings came during a period of uncertainty regarding his position in the national team, raising doubts about his future in the IPL. However, the 2025 season has marked a significant revival for the 30-year-old, showcasing his strategic bowling rotations, support for young talents like Arshdeep Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, and his ability to guide the game with the bat.

Although the Punjab Kings are still two wins away from claiming their first IPL title, the atmosphere surrounding the franchise this year feels different—more confident and composed. With Shreyas Iyer leading the charge, belief has transformed from mere talk into the cornerstone of what could be a groundbreaking season.

Teammate Shashank Singh emphasized the positive influence Iyer has had on the team's culture since taking over as captain. “Shreyas is a close friend of mine; I’ve known him for 10-15 years,” Shashank remarked during the post-match press conference following their game against MI. “Honestly, playing under his captaincy is one of the best experiences I’ve had,” he added.

Shashank highlighted Iyer's inclusive leadership style, noting that his approach extends beyond just the playing eleven. “The way he empowers everyone, not just me but all 25 members of the squad, including the support staff, content team, media team, and logistics, is truly admirable,” he concluded.
